The Cauldron is Cooking

During the months of February and March of 2011, Tia-Simone Gardner, Willow Scott, and Lauren Williams are pleased to present a new cultural space, Cauldron Projekts.

Based on the idea that Birmingham needs a creative and educational community that engages people, Cauldron Projekts will provide an artistic outlet for artists of all types. Located on 109 Richard Arrington Boulevard, Cauldron Projekts will give special attention to artists of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and will involve art including, but not limited to, visual, performance and literary arts.

Cauldron Projekts will reside in the previously named Bare Hands Gallery. After noticing a lack of African American participation in Birmingham visual art galleries, Gardner, Scott, and Williams began thinking of ways to create a more inclusive environment for those interested in the arts. Thanks to the generosity of Sarah Garden Armstrong, owner of the 21st Street Building, Gardner, Scott, and Williams will have creative occupation of the more than 1500 square feet of space for two months. In hopes of a response that is more reflective of the Birmingham populace, the Cauldron will encourage those interested in providing entertaining, lively, thought- provoking initiatives an opportunity to realize their work.

Who are we?
Lauren Williams is a 26 year old museum professional from Birmingham who, inspired by her grandmother, is approaching this project as a means to understand how she might better serve her community.

Willow Scott is 29 year old sculptural artist, also from Birmingham. In addition to her studio work, Scott is presently the Manager of the Southside Starbucks. She believes the Cauldron is a space for love, hard work, and coffee.

Tia-Simone Gardner is a 28 year old artist and educator. She believes that Birmingham’s unique history gives it a strong position as a cultural center and wants Cauldron Projekts to be a place to acknowledge this past while progressing towards a bright future.
